Chapter 5 Response

What I found interesting in this chapter was the idea of locating a “gay gene” or the idea of having a “gay test”. Imagine these ideas reversed.  Headlines and journal articles would read, ”Are you a heterosexual? Check your ring /index finger height to be sure!“ Or “Is your baby straight? We can locate the gene to determine this!”

It’s quite silly to have the need to fund research for ideas that are so ignorant. For example I believe this would be an equivalent of a study trying to eliminate a “minority gene”.  If this “gay gene” had been or were able to become a scientific reality then women would have the option to abort if having a homosexual child is undesirable to them.  It’s kind of scary to think what the results would be if children’s sexual orientation could be identified in the womb. What’s even more unsettling is the idea that children were being aborted based on their sexuality. If that were a reality who’s to say we wouldn’t push the Eugenics ideals even further to eliminate any other traits, features, complexions, etc that society has deemed undesirable.

Although I believe in the women’s right to choose it seems a bit drastic to abort not due to factors of consensual conception, or life threatening complications to the child or the mother, but because of the sexual orientation that is beyond the control of the fetus. I’m not sure what the solution would be in the very unlikely event that a “gay gene” could be identified. , but if it were ever to become true I hope the culture  has continued maturing in the way that LGBTQ culture is perceived and accepted.
